Is it ok to link to products on your site from site blog?
Is it still accepted practice to do that with hummingbird and penguin google updates?

For example having blog posts that have a news report and at the end mention one or two products related to the report that link to products on your site?

Also could it be beneficial to mix it up? For example sometimes post a news story with news and a little commentary relating to your site and in others linking to one or two products, etc.?

Thanks

And answer is yes but this should be done with care.

First this build strong internal linking between posts, news about that and product.

Second - you should be careful do this because texts as content must be quality, not copy-pasted somewhere from the internet. And links should be integrated into text - not just placed on bottom.

Hummingbird seems that implement lot of AI to detect low quality texts and texts built just for links.

Hummingbird update is not the big deal. You need to worry about Panda and Penguin update. One deals with content spam and other deals with link spam.

Here you need to worry about content and outgoing links both. The content should be unique and minimum 450-500 words. 300 words article are also acceptable but you don't want to take any chances. And when you link to your own products which is on different domain, make sure you use "nofollow" attribute.

This way you tell Google that you are not trying to increase the pagerank of linking websites or pages. Also make sure that there are less then 100 outbound links on that page.

When you link to the pages of your own website, whether it be subdomain/subdirectory you can use "dofollow" attribute.
