WordPress: Why the need to remove images linking to itself? Is it bad?

I saw so many posts about HOW to remove image linking to itself on a WordPress post. But nobody is explaining the reason WHY. Why is it bad and why everybody wants to remove image linking?

Well if you have a freedom of linking that image to anything you want, then why not do it, instead of linking that image back to itself. There is nothing that can be gained through this. If users clicks on that image and it doesn't redirects to anything then its of no use on the other hand if we link that image to any other webpage, and after that when users clicks on that image, the user will be redirected to that particular webpage.
