Is there a way to change my twitter username, without my old one being shown up when searching it?

I want to change my twitter username, but when you search my old (current) username when I change it, it shows with my new user name and account. Is there a way to stop this so people can't look me up using the old username? I don't want to make a new account because I have loads of followers and famous people follows, etc.

first of all change your current username

after that to delete the other follow these simple steps ::::::

go on to menu, then click settings ~ go onto username face

After that go to username and change username

Then go to user control and delete past username

Delete past references
