I understand that getting an app to sell it not trivial, with a growing competition of over 1/2 million apps.

If you want publicity more than money, making it a free app makes sense, some of these end up making big money through in app advertising or paid upgrades.

Certainly you should create a Facebook page dedicated to the app, serious marketers would use some Facebook paid advertising to bring viewers, perhaps running some sort of sweepstake to improve the ad click rate.

You accomplishment may be press release worthy, with luck you might get it mentioned in the local newspaper, writers often use them to help make their daily quotas, a press release is written in a formal reporter's voice with some human interest twist to make it more interesting, you could deliver one to the local paper as well as press release distribution services, some are free, the best known one charges $89 each which gets them seen by real news agencies. The real payoff would be to get featured on some national TV program.
