How to stop getting upset over mean things I read online?
I do my best to avoid social media (for ex deleted my facebook and twitter), but sometimes comments/views of people will be unavoidable. I saw mean comments about a celebrity I'm similar lookswise to, and saw the most horrible comments about her appearance. Even then when I see horrible comments about anyone it makes me very upset. I try to not let it affect me but I can't help it. It really does hurt. I spend a lot of time away from the internet but sometimes have to use it for school etc. I just cannot take criticism. Even though I get a lot of compliments, the few mean comments from bullies are the ones that consistently play in my mind. I concentrate on those comments and it makes me feel very depressed, upset and like I don't want to live. I know not everyone will like you in life but it hurts me deeply. Please help. (I'm 17 btw)
I mean, celebrities I think are gorgeous get called by many people online as unattractive and it hurts me because I feel as if, if they consider those gorgeous celebrities as unattractive then I must be awful. I know it's pathetic, sorry.

THIS IS INTERNET. they can't actually see you or know you, nor are close to you. its pointless. and if you spend your life worrying about people around you you won't be ok.

The issue seems to be that you're having a problem with thinking you aren't GOOD enough. Whatever happened to you in the past, let it go. Accept and move on. If it's too much to handle get professional help. You're young so, the sooner you do it the better. You're wasting your time worrying about being accepted by people around you. Here's something to remember- most of them won't accept you. They're too busy worried about their own problems to be focused on yours. Most of them haven't even accepted themselves. Only the people who you really want in your life will accept you. It's also good to look at your situation and realize that it is somewhat selfish of you to be so wrapped up in the criticism. Are you going to allow something to bring you down because you think you deserve it and you're not good enough? QUESTION your feelings. It is OK to change your way of thinking in order to grow. Be positive and only give your energy to others who deserve it! You create your own reality.

The negativity bias is doing its job. Our minds have a negativity bias - we like to focus on the 1% bad, even if there's 99% good.

Now you know this, you can ignore your negativity bias. Everything's great - you don't have any reason to be upset!
