internet problem please help!!!?

hey,I have a internet problem. I recently bouaght a new router to get better Wi-Fi to my room. I tried to connect a ethernet cable form the old router were the fiber coes in to my new asus router and them to my computer but it wont work. i have tried to connect the router with a small ethernet cable and the new router works fine. Can it be that i have to many points between my start and stop or maybe the long ethernet cable that goes down to my room isnt good enough? do you have a sulution ?

Try this turn the router on go to your room plug to router cable into the computer boot the computer up see if you have a cable connection, I can't tell you anything else I'm not a mind reader you have not said what operating system your using though I can guess that it is windows,
