Internet and phone not working?
Hi All, First of all, Merry Christmas.
Yesterday my internet and landline stopped working.
There is no dialtone on the phone and it dosent ring when someone calls.
Ive tried ringing it from my mobile and sometimes it rings once then i get static on my mobile like someone has picked up, other times it rings multiple times before I get the static.
I have tried different phone sockets and different phones but none of them work.
one of the phones I know works, but it didnt ring out loud, however it does have a LED that flashes when someone rings, and it still flashes.
When I pick up my mobile keeps ringing, as if the landline hasnt been answered, until I get the static.
Unicom charge £120 for the first hour and £60 per hour after that for them to send an engineer out, and I really cant afford that.
My internet is also down which is more of a problem for me as I have 5 university deadlines coming up in the next 3 weeks, and I have none of them completed yet.
It was gonna be hard enough to meet the deadlines before this problem.
When I boot my modem, I have a orange light on the internet for a few seconds then id goes of and another light next to it starts flashing and wont stop, when the internet is working both these lights are solid green.
It was working yesterday morning for a few minutes, then went off all day, then came back on at about 2 this morning.
thinking it was fixed, i turned it of and went to bed.
this morning I woke up, checked the phone and turned the internet on, still no dialtone, but the internet was working, so I went and got some breakfast, came back 20 minutes later and the internet was off again and has been off since.
Ive tried different modems, still no luck.
I would go into uni to work but it is a 80 mile round trip.
the phone is with Unicom (Uni-con as I call them, worst company Ive ever dealt with) and the internet is with virgin, it isnt fiberoptic.
a couple of days ago Openreach were working across the road putting new cables in the ground, thats the only thing that has changes as far as Im aware.
Unicom are out for the xmas holidays, and without a phone I cant phone virgin.

Do any of you know what might be causing this, and is there anything I might be able to do from my end to get it working again.

Thanks
No bad weather here yet, had some strong winds a few days ago, but apart from that the weathers been fine, i will try and phone virgin tomorrow

I'm guessing that the ice storms haven't reached you yet. There was still a lot of rain, so if you have underground wires, the phone lines may be shorted out by the floods. Do any of your neighbours with Unicom have the same problem. Openreach may have damaged the cable. If the UK is anything like Canada, there should be a box on the outside of your house, or just where the phone and cable lines enter on the inside, where you can plug in a phone. If you have dial tone at that point, then the problem is inside your house and your cost. If there is no dial tone at that point, then it is a network problem and Unicom will have to fix it at their own expense. If you have outages with two suppliers, then I expect the problem originated with Openreach and is outside your house, but check before placing a trouble call, a service they have to provide every day including Bank Holidays, so that you can save money.

Are you in a bad weather area? The storms we have had have caused mega problems. Sounds suspicious that BT were working across the road, a cable could have been disturbed. It is BT you need to reach, they supply the landlines, or try Virgin.

Well you are obviously in the UK so you are using a BT land line rented out to other licenced carriers.
Your telephone line has an intermittent disconnection fault at the very minimum, and if it is after your main socket in your premises then it is your responsibility to fix or get someone else to fix, but this is unlikely in my opinion.
If it is the line from the exchange up to and including the master socket that is at fault then it is the responsibility of your service provider to repair for free, and in my opinion that is likely to be the case in this instance given your lengthy description.
You can get some advice about proving the fault in or out of your property from the BT fault reporting site sub menus;
https://www.bt.com/consumerFaultTracking...URL_faults
Broadband can work rather poorly on a bad line even if one of the two wires used is duff, a telephone cannot, it needs both.
Christmas is a rather unfortunate time to have such a fault as the companies will not pay their staff the extra money unless it is an absolute emergency.
Apart from checking that your own equipment is OK, which is a bit difficult without a working telephone line it has got to be said, then it is a matter of waiting for Virgin to ask Openreach to fix your telephone line fault after which your broadband should magically start working again.
Sorry I can not be more help, ex BT Bob.
