what is the advantage to the app developer if the app is free for downloading and use

More people will download it and he/she will make lots of money from ads.

Ads, brother, ads are the money making science of the future. The more people like and know about that free app the more will download it. Eventually, companies will find it interesting that everyone is using that same app and will have to pay the designer to advertise their products in hopes of getting the people using the app to buy what they sell. And ultimately, if the app does really, really but really well, the designer might get to sell it to facebook and make 19 billion dollars in one deal... that's what more and less happens
