For any SEO company use the following steps:
1) ask them for examples of keywords they rank for (their own and or clients)
2) confirm the people they say are their clients really are their clients and that the rankings were due to the work of the SEO company.
3) confirm (using Google Keyword Planner within Google Adwords) that the keywords they are ranking for are valuable - i.e. users actually search those keywords
