Why had it become weird to want to keep your private life off Facebook?
7 years ago, I joined Facebook and like most people, I was so happy to find long lost friends and relatives and share so many ideas and get a glimpse into the lives of strangers. I even became narcissistic and found myself fawning over my pretty photos, and the compliments I received. It got to a point where I cared too much about Facebook, and felt like I had to compete with my fake friends in some ridiculous popularity contest. I grew tired of it and visited the site less and less. Because I'm a web reporter, I have to stay on Facebook to social monitor trends. I know use social media only to share interesting articles once in a while. It amazes me how a lot of people overshare and post every detail of their private life. I recently got engaged and only told my closed ones. No Facebook photo or announcement. I don't plan too. My private life is private. Many people I know who found out I was engaged were practically scandalized that I refuse to post new photos of my fiancé and I and of our upcoming wedding. The called me a sociopath when I said I refused to post any photo of our future kids online. What is so wrong with wanting to preserve your privacy?

Absolutely nothing and I applaud you for having the self-control to not post stuff you don't want to post on there.

I've stopped really using the site to post personal things about me (though my wife still puts pictures of us up every once in a while, not too bad). But I have friends who've been basically documenting their child's growth, from day one, for the past couple of years. I feel like an actor on the Truman Show, and it saddens me to know that that kid's going to be on the internet for virtually anyone to see his entire life.

I think what you're doing is the right thing, you're not a sociopath at all.

I've never been on Facebook, and I don't intent to use it. I loathe the very idea of it. Just listening to people who do use it is enough to put me off. I'm not interested in every tiny detail of people's lives, and I don't feel the need to share every tiny detail of my life with other people.
I can phone people and I can text people, I can send emails or even go down the outdated route of sending a letter. I can visit people and speak to them face to face. For me, this is more than enough.
When I tell people that I'm not on Facebook they often look at me as if I have two heads!
