Although you can create an online presence for virtually nothing, it can be costly to get people to a business site, advertising is the single biggest expense for many sites.

I assume if you were guaranteed to profit from any paid advertising you used, you would get all you could handle, successful eCommerce sites have profitable advertising but only after some testing and optimizing, marketers use careful tracking of conversion rats and split test optimization of the landing page to make ads more effective.

Search engines are the main source of "free" traffic, read up on SEO, carefully chosen outsourced assistance can reduce the drudgery of getting useful links. Google is on a SEO Spam war path, sloppy backlink getting methods from a few years ago can now be trouble.

Here's a Search Engine Optimization guide by an SEO authority, too much of the stuff taught by others is out of date or simply inaccurate.

Your site load time is sketchy, that increases bounce rates and also hurts search ranking. One case study found a 5 second load time caused a 20% bounce rate, reduced to 5% with a .5 second load time, Google's internal site design specs specify a .5 sec load time.

I couldn't remember seeing your own logo on the site and had to go back to locate it. It's an OK design but it doesn't make for a branding t-shirt that people would give to their friends. Something more attention getting might be needed to overcome paid banner ad blindness.

Hi there,

In truth, building traffic for a website takes both effort and time. The effort gets easier as you get used to doing it but, as you're probably already finding out the hard way, customers won't come to your site unless they have good reason to.

Here are three of the most effective ways of building traffic. If you can, make a focused effort on all three as, in combination, they are quite powerful:

1. Carry out some basic search engine optimisation (SEO) work so that would-be customers find you easily when using search engines to find services like yours. Use Google's Keyword tool to try out different search phrases to see which ones would best help drive traffic to your site. A quick search of basic SEO tips would help give you a start on this.

2. Produce good quality content - either in the form of weekly blog posts or as articles and features on your website. Regular written material is highly rated by search engines but also helps grow your credibility with your audience. Include plenty of bright, large photos of examples of your products. Such written material demonstrates your expertise and knowledge and gives prospects confidence in you. Promote your posts/articles using social media (Facebook, Twitter, etc). Your audience will retweet stuff they like - which increases your reach.

3. Participate in forums, blogs, Q and A websites and any other online or offline places where potential clients can be found. Don't advertise yourself there - be genuinely useful and slowly build a trusting audience.

This is all hard work at first but tackle it one piece at a time; when you get on top of it not only will it start to provide rewards but you'll find many of your competitors aren't doing any of this at all..!

Best of luck - I hope it works out for you.

Gary
