Help with wifi signal strength.?
I live on the 9th floor of an apartment complex and a hotel across the street the offers free wifi but unless I go downstairs I can't get connected to it. Is there any way I could boost the signal strength or something? I've looked it up on Google and it talks about wifi repeaters what is that? I'm not after a crazy strong connection just something I could use to check my email/Facebook/cracked without having to go downstairs.

Wifi has a range of about 65 feet - indoors. Assuming your apartment floors are 15 ft each and you are on the 9th floor (135 feet) and add in another 40 feet because the hotel is across the street, plus the hotel's wifi access point is an unknown distance from the outer wall of the hotel, and your computer is a few feet form the outer wall of the apartment, you are trying to use wifi well beyond it's distance limitations.
In order for a repeater to work, the repeater takes the wifi signal, amplifies it and sends it out. If the repeater can't see the signal, there is noting to repeat... or boost. You might be able to build a directional antenna, but without seeing the buildings, it is impossible to know if this will work. Ads |
