With the ever-changing Google algorithms, new penalties, and establishing best practices in accordance with them, SEO is always evolving, and will always be around.

What once was ideal practices -- just a matter of months ago -- are now considered obsolete; some are even considered bad practices, or black hat techniques.

To set yourself apart from other SEOs, learn PPC management, and dive into the techie parts of SEO. Learn not only why, but how-to. Learn FTP management, HTML, CSS, and Javascript. Know what to look for and know how to implement the changes. Good luck!

Yes but better to call it "online marketing" as search engines are now much better at following user behaviour. So marketing to internet users is also SEO.

Ya Mr. Guide you are right but listen one thing only when a website completed by HTML, JAVA, .NET or some other language then what is your next step, how you the your website product because directly no one knows your company, your website and no value of your business till you don't have your target audience or your website, your product not promote in the market.
These all are a SEO Executive responsibility so i think now understand a SEO Executive future and his working criteria.

Bcoz without promotion, without customers you are never survive in the market.

It has a bright future but not predictable as if what is would be exactly like. I think it will totally evolve into something else.

SEO is a profession that can be practiced while working for a company or as a solo practitioner. There are many jobboards like Dice and Craigslist that publish SEO job advertisements. It is worth noting that the compensation for SEO employees is equal to or even higher than that of developers, designers and marketers. Salaries over $80K per annum are not an exception for SEO jobs.
As a solo SEO practitioner you can make even more money. Almost all freelance sites have sections for SEO services and offers for $50 an hour or more are quite common. If you are still not confident that you can work on your own, you can start a SEO job, learn a bit and then start your own company.
If you already feel confident that you know a lot about SEO, you can take this quiz and see how you score. Well, don't get depressed if you didn't pass – here is a great checklist that will teach you a lot, even if you are already familiar with SEO.
