Does having multiple tabs open slow my internet speed?

unless you are switching in-between them allot it shouldnt be an issue and even then a webpage is usually about 1mb not much if you can get much more than that per second out of a router. But it sounds more like you need either a new router or faster internet. Tell him to plug in a ethernet cord and get a gigabit router.
