My internet is slow for my computer, but not my dad's.?
This is an odd one. I recently switched to Comcast who gave us internet that is supposed to be around 55 Mb/s. However, when I do a speed test on my computer (the one by Ookla), it says I'm getting around 8 Mb/s, when I am only around 15 ft away from the router with a round 2 walls in the way. I did the same test on my dad's computer (which is inferior in almost every way) and he got around 33 Mb/s when he was on the other side of the house, 60 feet away, with many walls between him. When I am plugged into the internet via Ethernet cable, I get the full 55 Mb/s, but unplug the computer and it instantly drops to 15 Mb/s when I'm right next to the router. Please help.

p.s. I know quite a bit about computers and internet, so don't treat me like I am new to this.

p.p.s. Yes, I DEFINITELY know the difference between Mb/s and MB/s. Please don't say that I'm mistaking those two.

Maybe the channel of the router is not good for your wireless card. Some channels do not work well on certain cards. Or just that his machine is configured correctly for wireless and yours is not.

The best thing I did to improve the speed of our computers is to run AVG PC tuneup, your speed will just about double, and the program will remove a ton of crap that is slowing your computer down.We ran it on my wife's and mine and it took out about a thousand items that was slowing them both down.We run it about every 90 days now.Good luck to you getting the speed back into your computer.
