If you like video games, then you could always play an online game (MMO).

Even if you don't care much for video games, it can be a good way to meet people. I have 2 very good friends who I met online through video games, and now our relationship isn't at all based around a game.

Before I met these 2 individuals, I had this one friend who I knew extremely well for 4 years, unfortunately our relationship did revolve entirely around this game, so we aren't in contact anymore.

You could go to Omegle (http://www.omegle.com/). Where you can talk to people about topics you enjoy. (through text or video if you have a webcam)
