I'm going to say word of mouth marketing. This would include all the subsets that fall underneath that category such as viral marketing. Word of mouth marketing is when your buddy John won't shut up about how great his new iPhone is and viral marketing is when he pulls up to your house in his shiny new BMW coupe. One is based on a persons genuine excitement about a product or service the other is based on the person using the product or service in a public setting.

Word of mouth marketing is easier in the sense that your focus is shifted to the design and experience that your product or service provides to the consumer. Your focus is being remarkable enough to be talked about. That of course in itself is not easy at all but it is easy in the sense that your marketing is left for your customers to do instead of you. Excited fanatical customers are extremely valuable long term.

I will say the main concept is the notion of building a relationship with your customer. Relationship means that a customer will come back to you when he/she needs the product again. This becomes especially important given that nowadays we have so much of competition in almost every industry. This way you are gradually building a customer base and loyalty. Attracting new customers gets tremendously expensive and hence relationship marketing is the new mantra!
