what's the value of a Facebook Like to a brand?

I am doing some research on marketing trends and one thing that often comes up is Facebook likes. I remember years ago big brands were racing to get as many real Facebook likes as possible. Is this still the case?

What is the going rate for a facebook like these days and how important is it for a brand to obtain more legitimate Facebook likes.
