I think forum submission is good to get dofollow backlinks and get good traffic also. But you must be select community forums related to your niche market.

Submit your site to directories to get a backlink and ofcourse you can drive traffic.
But be sure to check the quality of the directory i.e, whether the Directory is spammed one or not?
It has google PR or not?
If you find the directory good then simply submit your blog,you can get high quality backlink
