In 2013, the supreme court struck down a key provision of the landmark voting rights act of 1965. In the court's official opinion chief justice John Roberts, writing for the majority, wrote:

“Our country has changed, and while any racial discrimination in voting is too much, Congress must ensure that the legislation it passes to remedy that problem speaks to current conditions.”

I agree with the Court's decision. Things have changed greatly. In this age of practically everyone carrying a phone with video capability and almost instant uploading to social media sites, true discriminatory practices are easily exposed. I don't recall any such instances of this.

What the Democrats are so angry about is losing an easy defense against common-sense voter ID laws that many states have been trying to institute. In an age where your ID is needed for many things, with no Democrat argument, this clearly exposes their desire to ban voter ID laws - they are a proven deterrent to voter fraud. Voter fraud is something the Democrats have relied on for decades and they are desperate to not lose it.
