I did this recently. I was a day late because I hadn't checked my facebook page on my friend's birthday.

Hmm I would rather say, Happy belated birthday, that would be more appropriate then happy b-day yesterday, because it sounds odd.

No it isn't rude, but the more appropriate way would have been "Happy Belated Birthday"
