"Bit coin" is a digital currency that popped up a couple of years ago now. It requires users to "farm" bit coins (basically, running computer processes to generate them). As I recall, the original bitcoins took only a few seconds or minutes to generate, but with each successive one it requires more and more time to generate one.

It's a controversy because it's not really possible to track the circulation of bit coins easily, there's no federal regulation over it, and because it's digital, it can disappear in the blink of an eye and people could lose "real" money in the process.

the fuss is that bitcoins are not governed by any central authority, government, bank, or country. fees are extremely less, and you can send money (bitcoins) globally instantly.
