Question about social networks.?

I'm doing a project for school where I have to create a social network. I want to know what aspects that people like most about them, whether it be from Twitter, Instagram, Tumblr, Facebook, MySpace, even Friendster! I want to implement some of these functions into my project to create it the best tony abillities. I also want to know what some of these sites could have done better to make their sites better. Privacy/Security seems to be the number one issue with social networking. Anyone can add better integration services that enhances the networking experience.
