do I have some kind of computer virus?

I have not yet had any problems with my laptop but suddenly today literally hundreds of pop up ads have been showing up (like those 'one weird trick to getting muscles in a day' ads) and my laptop is going painfully slow, is this related? How can I fix it?

Go to download.com and get Malwarebytes. Update it before you run it. It's free and removes malware and adware. Usually the Quick Scan fixes it. So try that one first.

Yes. It seems you have gotten a form of a virus. Try deleting some recent files, documents or programs you have downloaded from the internet as it may just be a demand of a program you have downloaded. Also, some sites can automatically download viruses to your computer, try and stay away from shady websites and don't click any adds you see at the side of Youtube or any other site.

If you have a anti-virus software try and see if it can detect anything and make it clear anything out that is a threat. If you don't have an anti-virus software I highly recommend you get one as it can really help save your computer from viruses.
