Is it legal to make a video that includes a clip of a site you don't own?
I want to make a video that shows my customers how to use another site. It would show the viewer what's there and how to navigate it, without showing enough content to substantially take away value from their site. I'm hoping it qualifies as "fair use" excerpting. I've seen videos published by "Internet marketing gurus" that show how to use other sites, e.g. FaceBook. Or do I need to get permission first?

It's usually better if you can get permission first. Whether or not you NEED permission can be a difficult question to answer in the context.

If it has copy rights or a patent on the site you need written permission. It doesnt hurt to contact them or pay a small fee because the site is not free to them.

Just cite the video, like you would cite a source for a research paper. Under the video put a caption giving credit of the video to that site.

Just email the support of the site you want to do the video of. Some sites have trademarked information that they would not want the public to see... best if you check with them.
Otherwise you can check out of anyone has done a video similar to yours, then make the decision. |
