Charter internet, I dont get this..?

They left a wifi router (modem) that I did not want ... so I got charged 40 dollars activation. I had bought my own router at target. The lady is telling me I will not be able to use this it has to be their wifi?! Is this true? I have never had this issue when I bought my own wifi router before?

A router and a modem are not the same. Although a modem can also come with a built-in router, your service will not work without a modem. The device you purchased at Target is likely a wireless router only. A $40 activation fee is likely standard and probably has nothing to do with the fact that they provided a modem for your service.

You can still use your own router though. Just plug a network cable from one of the LAN jacks on the Charter device into the WAN (or Internet) port of your router. Be aware that any other devices connected directly to the Charter router (wired or wireless) will not be on the same LAN as devices connected to your own router, so you should only connect devices to your own router via wired/wireless. There are ways to use both wifi devices at once, but that is another involved process.

They will only connect to the MAC address for the router supplied with the account.

The activation charge is a standard fee for all accounts.

You have to purchase the correct "modem" to avoid the monthly rental fee of using theirs. The activation charge is for activating the account, not the modem. They left you a modem that also has a wireless router built into it. You can also buy a "modem/router" or you could buy just the modem and attach the router you got from Target.
