I'm a facebook user. In many ways facebook has been a friend because it has allowed me to interact with others at a time when I would otherwise not be able.

It is a hindrance, as is Yahoo! Answers, if I spend too much time on it.

As for the privacy issue, if one takes the time to use the privacy tools one can protect their privacy, but facebook really needs to learn to give people the heads up on when they are going to be tinkering in that department as they often undo some of the privacy settings the user puts in place.
