Do refunds show up instantly on paypal?

I bought something on eBay and returned it. The seller said it wasn't a problem and that they would send me a refund. That was yesterday and it still hasn't shown up in my paypal balance. They told me that it takes 24-48 hours. Is this true? I always thought it was instant.

it depends on which payment method you used.

some transactions can take upto 5-10 days to show up, your bank will take 5 days to clear the money, you have to wait for your bank to send the money to paypal and then paypal to send it to the seller, then you have to wait for the seller's paypal account to send it back. if can take upto 5 days to show up.

instant bank transfers can also take 2 or more days to show up, and a few more days to clear.
