How to be able to message people on Facebook? (Read)?

I had an old friend and I found her aunt on Facebook and I want to send the aunt a message but it will not let me because of her privacy settings or mine but I have tried this with other people and it is like that too so how can I message her asking her if she knows where her niece is? How can I change my privacy settings?

First off if you are not 'Friends' with the person, the message goes into the OTHER in box NOT THE MAIN ONE....a lot of people don't know to check the OTHER in box...

So I would suggest sending a FRIEND REQUEST to the person and then wait a day or 2 and if no reply check back on the persons page and see if the friend request is still pending.......if so then you can wait or try sending a message again, sometimes the message will take affect after you send the friend request.
