What's the best way to promote a Facebook Page for a small business?

We (me mother and I) run an online business from home, called Magpies Miniatures. I've set up a facebook page to accompany the website, and have the link on the webpage on the footer, so it always shows, but what's a pro-active way to encourage and engage new users? Anyone any helpful hints?

I've found advertising on the pay per click on search engines helps and is cost effective.
