What constitutes a successful website in terms of traffic?
How many hits should a website get a day
for it to be economically viable in terms
of attracting advertising revenue?
Any links appreciated...

one thing you need for success online and thats traffic;

the amount of traffic required for a viable business however varies drastically depending on your business model. what fits for everything weather you have large amounts of traffic or a little is your conversion rate its definitely something you should take seriously.

for example if you only get 10 hits a day thats only 300 a month if you have a high ticket item like $2,500 and your website converts at 3% your generating 10 sales a month that $25,000 I would say this is economically viable.

you can get the full scoop on conversion optimization through the source link.

A success is meeting traffic goals. some blog operators would be happy to earn any ad revenue with a years time. An eCommerce site with with fixed operating costs with have specific minimal traffic requirements. The quality of visitors makes a huge difference in value, free download sites attract lots of visitors but are poor sites for advertisers wanting people to spend money.

One place to get concrete site traffic stats are indirect ad space brokers, like buyads.com, buysellads.com, you can discover the minimum traffic these brokers appear to require, which may be something over 1000 visitors a week.
