To become a "twitter celebrity" you'll need to follow others and try to get followed back. This is a difficult job though.

If you want to have thousands of followers then you are going to need software for the job.
To grow your list you are going to need to add a couple of hundred Twitter users a day and
you're also going to have to be able to unfollow people not following you back after a day or so.

I add 200 targeted users a day and generally get 80 plus of those users to follow me back.
your following needs to be targeted or else you are wasting your time. You use software to find
the followers and this can be done in a couple of ways.

You can:

Search for users in the Twitter stream by a keyword phrase.
Follow the followers of someone big in your niche

These are the types of users who will follow you back.

The following and unfollowing process needs to be done in bulk, but you also have to ensure that you abide
by Twitter's TOS. To keep under the radar, never add more than 200 users a day (Twitter allows 500) and give
your potential followers a day or so to follow you back.
