How do you send a direct message on TWITTER?

I go into send aa direct message but the person i want to send the direct message to doesn't come up on my list so im quite confused
im also new to twitter so i dont really know how it works

You can only send a direct message to your followers. Even if you are following someone, you can't send a direct message to them unless they are following you as well. So, if they aren't in your list, they probably aren't following you.

However, you can get a message to someone through and @mention, but it will be in the public time line, so everyone who can see your tweets will see it. If that is acceptable, all you have to do is put @username then type message. On that person's home page, they can click on their @username by where it says direct message, and see any tweets meant for them.
