how do i get facebook messenger like program for windows 8 pc?

I am looking for a free downloadable program or app for my windows 8 laptop that works like the facebook messenger app on android or apple products. Basically, it has to do things like be able to message friends, and that's it. I personally would like only remain logged in on the messenger and not on my internet browser, as I let someone else hold onto my password. This helps I can concentrate on my school work without being completely cut off from the world. Do you have any experience with programs that have worked well for facebook on your laptop? Let me know
