Facebook Messenger and phone contacts.?

Okay so here's what happened: I gave this guy my number and he asked me the initial of my last name when he was adding it to his contacts, I told them, then he said my actual last name. I was very freaked out and he told me that his facebook messenger synced my facebook. When I added his number, it did the same thing. It's creepy and I don't like it. Like you don't even need to know the name of a person, just add their number into your contact list and bam you have their account to add. I deleted my number off of facebook (I still have the actual facebook app on my phone) and also deleted messenger off my phone, but I've been too freaked out to give my number to anyone to see if it does it again.
lol, my question is: did I fix it and will it not happen again, or is there anything else I need to do?

Clear out any info from facebook that you don't want used for credit fraud. Use a google voice number instead.
