What did regular people use the internet for in the beginning? Did they use it for communication, information or what? Thanks.

The internet goes right back to the days of amateur radio and came from packet radio.

The people who developed the packet radio system (which was mainly to send contact messages over long distances to mailboxes (like e-mail - but without the spam!)) then went to develop a network throughout the world for the US military.

The network had to be secure but made into a network that could not be shut down all together by any attack on the country. So if someone used an EMP (electro-magnetic pulse) device in Washington, whilst it would fry all the computer systems in the vicinity the network would correct itself and work around it and still allow the military to communicate from point a to point b.

The only problem with this was that you can't have both a network that is fully secure and one that can't be shut down. So the only way to make this network was to release it into the general public and allow them to build onto the network, building up a more and more complex WAN. The more computers adding to the network the harder it is to fully shut down.

Now the internet is such a strong network that it would take something really intense to be able to fully shut it down, even if you took down the entire US network, the internet would still survive in other countries and because of the way it works using routing it would find a way to bypass the network section that is down and continue to send messages around the world.
