Can people really fall in love over the internet?

I just had someone I have only talked to on Skype and social media sites tell me that he likes me because of my personality.
(He told me this before we slyped so he actually did not know what I looked like at the time)

I thought this was very sweet, but I had to explain to him that he was not really feeling what he thought he was feeling.

He's 2 years younger than me too.

I think that this is something that comes with age, but can people really get attached to someone over the internet whom they've never met in person or do they get attached to something else? (i.e the feeling they get from imagining what it would be like if the person was actually there)

I met this man over the internet. We texted and talked on the phone for about three months before we actully see eachother face to face and we really hit it off. We are now engaged lol
