does hostgator allows to advertise on their self hosted blogs?

You can do pretty much what you want if it's not illegal and doesn't overload their server, that's the big advantage of being in control of the hosting account, some also believe it may be better to get the domain name from a separate source, some hosts (not hostGator) are known to hold the name hostage when you try to transfer to a different host.

You can do what ever you like as long as it's legal as you have total control over you site.
