But there are tools that will do a part of the hard work (tracking keyword position in search engines, tracking competitors etc..) for you.

Yeah definitely. If you give your link or keyword in source part, then there is possibility of increasing in traffic. But that link should be relevant to that Question or Answer. Many other simple methods like forum, blog commenting etc can be done.
