Do you personally feel invaded publicly? Has reduction of privacy ever been this bad e.g. in the past with newspapers etc., now that we have the internet?

You cannot blame the Internet/Facebook for taking away privacy. Privacy was, and is, being given up by anyone who uses the Internet.

The Internet/Facebook can only know what you tell it. It can only see pictures you post. If you don't post personal information and/or pictures, you will keep your privacy. I have linked an article that gives you some examples. Please check out the entire blog. It has many articles that tell how your privacy is taken away in various ways.

Let's also not forget the use of smartphones, where you can be tracked through the GPS feature.

So, is the Internet to blame? Not at all. It's how you use it.
