Getting paid monthly is most common, some of the sites using the popular Google Adsense ad system can take a year or more to get the 10,000 or so visitors needed to earn the min payout.

A small operator would sign up to some ad network, after being approved, insert a bit of code into their pages which allows the ad network to insert ads of their choosing, you might occasionally see ads from large online retailers. Typical earnings might average about 1 or 2 cents per visitor.

A search for Adsense Alternatives would get you reviews of similar ad systems suitable for smaller site operators. Some of the more elite ad networks require sites to get a min of 500,000 visitors a month.

Actively promoting affiliate links to businesses whereby you collect a commission on sales has a potential for earning more money than passive advertisements.

I would also say that it's common to be paid on a monthly basis, not daily.
