It is difficult to make money online, most people fail in such ventures.

The simple idea you describe is the sort of thing that fails.

You would have to learn a lot about the process and treat it like a real business.

Some selling methods:
* Buy items wholesale and sell them online for prices discounted from standard retail.
* Sell items that are actually delivered by a drop shipping wholesaler, you don't have to maintain an inventory but profits are smaller. You still take payments from buyers.
* Affiliate market products on other store sites and receive a 4% to 20% commission for any sales resulting from your referral. You don't need to invest in inventory or setup complicated payment processing, you would be competing with millions of other affiliates out there.

Selling through an eBay or Amazon 'store' can be a simpler way to start a store of sorts, you may find the biggest challenge in running your own store site is getting customers, ebay/Amazon take care of some of the technical details and send you customers for a fee.

A forum site with a lot of people new to affiliate marketing is Warriorforum.com spend some time reading the discussions to get a sense of perspective, the WSO section has relative cheap member written tutorials.

One conservative and cheap way to try your hand at it:
Create a free Google Blogger.com blog on a subject you like.
Write "How to" articles and product reviews. Lots of quality content gets more search traffic.
Add Google Adsense ads to earn a little ad revenue (the payoff could be a year of though)
Join the Amazon affiliate program and makes links to Amazon in some of your review articles, their commissions are small but their sales rates are way higher than some other affiliate programs.
