Is completing surveys free?

I downloaded something and when I tried to unpack it from RaR file it required a password, and in the readme file I found that I need to complete a survey. I never wanted to complete surveys but I really need this file, so are surveys free?

They (the rar maker) earns perhaps 1/2 a dollar for recruiting you to do what is some sort of marketing trick, requiring you to sign up for a product trial, etc.

If I were you, I would delete that file from my computer. You should not be required to use a password for a download if it's free, unless you have downloaded a web server, and never take a survey unless you are getting paid. I do market research and get paid for taking surveys every day. So, you may have downloaded something bad. Delete it before they steal information from you.
