How can a poor website rank above reputable sites?
A new competitor (less than 3 months) is ranking on Page 1 of Google for a highly competitive search term in my niche.

The domain is relatively new, it's hosted on a Free WIX site and it's poorly laid out with little content other than the keyword a few times (i.e they didn't even subscribe for a paid WIX site) Opensite explorer is showing only 1 backlink from a blog and the Meta description seems to be keyword stuffed.

What's happened here as I thought it might be something dodgy and Google would find out within a week or so but they seem to be moving up passed highly reputable websites like Etsy!

There doesn't seem to be any 301 redirects in play here.
Just to clarify I'm not asking about how I can rank, I'm asking how a brand new site with little SEO work done seems to be ranking.

This is well known Google issue. New sites get boost on SERP, but then they start slowly to lose positions from old, trusted and reputable sites.
