Can't guess te exact context you are interested in...

Until recently, search engines passed on the keyword that sent a visitor to a web site, Google has stopped this with their Secure Search:
http://searchenginewatch.com/article/229...ure-Search

Searches within sites may be done by their own server side script, which might be logged to an internal database.
