[INTERNET] Telstra ADSL 2+ not performing as it should?
I've had this problem for about a year now. I was at a friends house, when I asked him what internet/plan he has. He told me the 50GB per month ADSL2+. He was getting 10mbps+ on his download and upload. I reccomended it to my mother, and within a month, we had it. It was performing as expected for about 2 hours, and then it went downhill. 240pp YouTube videos took ages to load, loading up a simple website was a problem, and we would have random dropouts.
Modem Model: technicolor TG797n v3
GB per month: 50GB
Plan: ADSL2+

Hey Danke.

It really depends on what speed they promised you with the plan. I'm running 500 gb a month and I'm getting about 21 mbps download and the same upload as you which is horrible in Australia. Even though they say you should be reaching about 10 mbps and whatnot it doesn't mean you will be reaching those speeds. Those are the speeds that are possible to reach but most of the time you won't be reaching those speeds since other people in your town, city are also using internet.

When it comes to DSL the line isn't shared like Cable internet is. The router can become overcrowded leading to lower available speeds, but generally with DSL the bandwidth you pay for is carved out just for you. That being said one of the biggest problems with DSL is signal. DSL runs over POTS aka Plain Old Telephone System. The signal has to run through the telephone wires that may or may not have been updated. If they haven't been updated lots of interference and noise issues can occur on the line and cause signal degradation and attenuation. Distance can also be a cause of attenuation and the farther you are from your ISP's DSL Router Hub the less signal you're going to get. Less signal = less speed. That issue is something the phone company will have to correct before you see any improvement. However a few troubleshooting steps to help you just in case it's on your end! ->

The longer your telephone wires the more signal attenuation will occur. The best practice when it comes to setting up your ADSL2+ modem is to place it nearest the phone jack that has the shortest route to the outside line.

Also make sure the line from the jack to the modem is no more than 5ft. Another thing to check(if you're running a shared DSL line) is that your DSL filters aren't faulty and that they're plugged into every phone. The only way I know to check this at home is to swap out the filter for a known-good filter. If that doesn't do the trick try swapping out the modem with a new one from your ISP(hope you're on a rental).

I've since given up the fight and switched to Cable internet for the reliability(Much higher speeds too). My fight with DSL was long and hard and I did all I could to ensure it wasn't a problem on my end. In the end it came down to the Telephone companies faulty wiring, and they haven't fixed it yet. Good luck to you though, I pass the torch on fellow DSL Diagnoser!
