How to fix lack of education?
My assignment is to write a letter to a cabinet member explaining what I think is the most significant factor that causes poverty. I personally think it is lack of education, or, lack of opportunity to get education. The other part is, I have to explain what my solution to it would be. I have brainstormed some ideas such as to get more parents involved, possibly raise academic standards, or to educate "better" teachers. Does anyone have any opinions that could be of help? Or any opinions on my ideas?

Nothing to do with education and everything to do with feeding the rich. Take a look at politics through history, and none of it works for the common man. Why do 80 something people in the world have more wealth than 3.5 billion other people.

Here's some arguments on your idea:
Poverty is one of the failings of our economic system: By promoting education we are promoting science (financial science as well). Also by promoting science through education we can hope to find new and better ways to be more productive and use more effectively resources, produce more foodstuff, more effective distribution etc. After all poverty is not the lack of paper (which is money) but the lack of products. Also education can be philosophy, sociology law, and we can improve the ways we behave in our societies as individuals, so we can rely one on other for support, fight greed, and antisocial behaviours that promote poverty etc.
It is a good idea to involve parents in the process, after all they can learn things as well. Education should be accessible to everyone regardless of social status and economic capacity. It should be spherical and include all of humanity's sciences. The media should also be included and they could play a decisive role in that aspect. All social media should be "made" (this is a tricky one) to broadcast subjects suitable for all people, documentaries and unbiased educational broadcasts created by the autonomous Academic and educational community. The internet can help a lot in the area of free and high quality education. Thousands of students can simultaneously attend classes of the same quality this way with little cost. The highest education should increase to the maximum capacity the society can maintain and only the most prominent candidates should be selected among the society to attend without consideration for their personal finances (free highest education via exams, so effectively the entry levels are proportional to the number of students the state can accommodate picking the best). Teachers should be made every certain periods of time to attend their "specialities" again in these institutions, for free, in order for them to be able to catch up with the scientific novelties so that the process is accelerated. The Academics could change Universities every so often as well to ensure an even distribution of quality among universities as well as an enhanced dispersement. The same principles can be applied to all levels of education.
You can take it from here. Be radical, try to think out of the box.
There are a lot of other causes of poverty you could choose from like overpopulation, but I personally like your choice a lot. I think it hits the spot because education is the best way to strike all of humanity's failings in one blow. Good luck!
