How can I get Twitter followers?

I have my own wedding website and I have contemplated hiring a person to do my social media work for me. But then found out that I did not make enough money for that yet. I just signed up for Twitter about a month ago and have about 500 followers. How can I get Twitter followers like the people who have thousands and thousands? Any help would be appreciated.

You can get materials about Twitter and Social Media 2.0 (and methods) on the traffic exchanges. I've seen them but felt no need.
The TEs are an inexpensive way to advertise as well. This one is the best IMHO. A good place to start.

Both are free. If you can't find anything, go to one of the AF seminars.
A person with a good bullet line (short and sweet sales line) like "Getting married? I can help with free.ideas.follow me on Twiiter". would make a good splash page if you put an opt in box for people to follow you on twitter. You'd twitter them when you received the opt in. You could could get some (how many is the question) if you were classy about it and didn't seem like you were conning anyone.
they would of course be sincere, interested followers. You'd just have to speak the language they want to hear...Find out: about autoresponders. Why pay someone when you can have it done automatically for about $20/month plus a couple hours here and there (surfing 5-10 exchanges). You just have to make the page and have a link to your site and voila. Run the ad.

I think you need to be famous. Not legitimately famous for any talents you may possess, but internet famous. I'd suggest getting yourself in a viral video. Maybe a "leaked" sex tape like Kim Kardashian or a funny video of you fighting with a lightsaber like Random, Awkward FatKid.

Write a bunch of smack, like you're one arm fighting three guys while you tweet, or you're making love to two people at once on the bus, or you've just eaten a giant squid at the Asian fish market but you refuse to pay. That sort of stuff drags them out.

Some people use automated programs that will go and just add people based on keywords and then you hope that those people follow you back. These programs cost money and most are not that effective. The best way to get Twitter followers that will be interested in you, is to find people that interest you.

Do a search on Twitter for different wedding keywords and then you will have to manually add those people. You will probably find a lot of people who are planning weddings or have connections in the wedding industry. These are the people that you would want to add.

Then again, you hope they follow you back. The key to Twitter is actually using it and engaging in conversations with people and letting them know who you are, what you know, and that you are an expert in your field.
