It's Google's answer to Facebook. Since Android is owned by Google, and they're pushing the Google Plus product pretty hard, you're going to see crossover effects.
Mostly it's getting a lot of attention because it's a good social networking site with a very easy to use interface and a lot of people are getting sick of certain aspects of Facebook.

Google Plus is a social network, like Facebook, Twitter and other social media platforms, you can create a profile, find friends, add photos and videos, share links and post comments. You can comment on other people’s posts and you can send private messages.

In short, you can do all of the things that you’re already doing on Facebook and even on Twitter.

So why Use Google Plus?

Google Plus lets you do a few things that you can’t do on other social networks.

Hangouts

are a form of video conferencing in which up to ten users can turn on their webcams and chat online.

Would be nice for business use – could put together a hangout for employees or team members. You will need to download the Google Voice program on your computer.

Sparks

is an integration with Google’s search engine that pushes content onto the platform and makes finding articles to share easier.

Similar to Google alert feed, not everything in sparks has necessarily been shared on Google Plus. It’s also a good way to keep up with topics of importance to you.

Circles
Represent social circles and they provide a way to divide up those who you follow into different groups of contacts together.

You can share posts only with certain circles if you want. You can create as many circles as you want and add people to as many circles as you want.

This is one of the major missing features of Facebook and other social media sites.

The +1 button

+1's are the pages around the web you like, agree with, or want to recommend to others. +1 Buttons will show up in the Google search results, if you are logged in.

Works similar to Facebook Like button, as it is a vote for sites that you like. All you have to do is click the +1 button (it looks like the symbol above) when logged into your Google account.

Also +1 buttons can be installed on your site just like the Like button from Facebook. Click here to add +1 button to your site.

Google Mobile

You can access Google Plus on your mobile device. Currently the only app is for Android, with iPhone coming soon.

But you can access google.com/+ in your browser on Android, iPhone, iPad and Blackberry with the specified OS systems. Click here to get access to Google mobile.
