running windows Vista - and the control panel is not functioning when I try to uninstall Firefox - other junk programs uninstall just fine

you can try to use a third-party programs manager like ccleaner and try to use that to uninstall it, that happened o me once with Microsoft Office.

Try rebooting in safe mode and uninstalling it from there. Or try an Uninstaller software program, like Revo Uninstaller

by the way...you can use windows 7 or 8, they are much better
